ALFONSO GENERALAO Alfonso Generalao’s masterful creations in bronze are an expression of his philosophy of life, where the simplest things are the most profound. The strength and resilience seen in his artwork are reflections of his Filipino and Mexican/Indian heritage.

Born in San Francisco, CA in 1942 and raised subsequently in Arizona, Alfonso grew up in an agrarian environment appropriately called “Burro Town.” Surrounded by the simple and lively culture of the migrant workers and the Native American Yumas, he was instilled with an aesthetic appreciation of the Adobe and

Canchanilla lifestyles. The spirit of these people and their devotion to the earth has been a strong influence in his work.

Encouraged and inspired by the sculptor Benny Bufano, Alfonso developed his own method and style through years of self-inquiry and determination to succeed. A faithful practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism, Alfonso is able to use this energy to mine the feelings of each of his subjects. Quoting his teacher, Mr. Ikeda, he says, “Art – it is a flower of life, an external healing power.”

Alfonso has exhibited his creations in numerous galleries throughout the Bay Area and abroad. He resides in Oakland, CA.
